Sport Recreation South Africa (SRSA)

SRSA is a major stakeholder of the South African Table Tennis’ Board (SATTB) by providing funds and assistance to further the SATTB’s objectives in the development of table tennis in all the corners of our country. Funding was made available for the following projects:

Project 1 - More Medals: African Youth Championships

Once again Sport and Recreation South Africa has given the SATTB the opportunity to participate in the 16th African Youth Championships in January 2007. The objective for this project is to have an increased participation of the youth on the African Continent, thereby identifying athletes for the High Performance Programme of the SATTB. The selection of the SA Youth team will take place at the end of the year.

Project 2 - More Medals: SAFIRS International Youth Championships

The SAFIRS International Youth Championships will take place in February 2007 and through this project, the SATTB will be able to prepare the Cadet team for the ITTF World Cadet Challenge to be hosted in South Africa in 2007.

National Lotteries Board (NLB)

NLB is another major stakeholder of the SATTB by providing funds and assistance to further the SATTB’s objectives in making sure that table tennis is played throughout the country. Through financial support from the NLB, the SATTB was able to carryout the following projects:

Project 1 - National table tennis Academy

Once again through the allocation of funding from the National Lotteries Board, SATTB is able to continue with the national table tennis academy at the High Performance Center in Tswane. The national academy was inaugurated in May 2005. The number of athletes has now increased from six in 2005 to eleven this year. On the 6 & 7 May 2006, the International Coach Mr. Zhou and Mr. Clement Meyer (Vice President Coaching and Development for SATTB) carried out an evaluation training camp at the John Barrable Hall in Benoni whereby six athletes were identified to join the National Academy. The new athletes to join the academy are:

Lesego Seleke (SFS)

Khanyisile Madlala (EG)

Stephany Martins (BOL)

Itumeleng Molahloe (SFS)

Cody Meyer (WP)

Sabu Mazwi (WP)

Theo Cogill (Received an IOC Solidarity Scholarship)

The number of athletes and management in this programme comprises of 5 female and 6 male athletes, the coach and manager. The Academy program provides accommodation, meals, training, counseling, a Life Skills program, medical intervention as well as secondary and tertiary Education

Project 2 - International participation

This is to provide our top athletes with the opportunity to compete in International Championships. Our athletes need the international exposure which will develop their game and prepare them for other international competitions and provide continuous exposure to the world’s best players.

Project 3 - Capacity building

The SATTB wishes to continue the process of providing Capacity Building courses focusing on Coach & Technical Official certification.

Project 4 - Equipment

Through the support of the National Lotteries Distribution Trust, the SATTB was able to provide equipment to 9 existing and 17 new affiliates. The delivery of tables is still in process.
