The opportunity of having an ITTF representative training people from all corners of South Africa on the edicts of Table Tennis refereeing does not come around often, but when Cyril Sen from Malaysia, an ITTF accredited trainer and evaluator, offered to host an ITTF National Referee’s Course in South Africa as part of his trip around Lesotho and SA, the opportunity was jumped at by both SATTB and local International Umpires wanting to further their career in Table Tennis knowledge.
Thus, on the 9th October 2009, 20 International Umpires came together in Ekurhuleni to receive instruction on the art of being a Table Tennis Referee.
The course in it self was intensive and difficult. A fact that was attested by the numerous questions, debates and explanations that Cyril Sen had to contest with during the run of the three days. The final written exam of two and half hours, tested all incumbents to their limits of rules, regulations and procedural know-how.
The diversity, camaraderie and friendship in evidence during the course of the three days is proof that Table Tennis around South Africa is healthy and growing.
The whole production took place thanks to funding by the National Lotteries Board.
